PROTECTION OF STATE INFORMATION BILL

On Tuesday the South African Parliament passed the Protection of Information Bill. Two ANC members didn't participate in the voting for the Bill. The oopposition parties led by the DA have threatened Constitutional Court action if the Bill is accented to.

From the National Assembly the Bill will serve before the National Council of Provinces for further scrutiny. If passed by the NCOP matters will be in the hands of President Jacob Zuma to make real the will of the majority by signinging into an Act.

It will then be up to the media, opposition parties to do their damnest to win in court what they couldn't win through the will of the majority.

I stil don't understand what their beef is. We have a wonderful constitution that provides checks and balances for any possible abuses of power. We also have other agencies where aggrieved parties can turn to for recourse to justice.

Maybe as the debate rages on I will be able to make sense out of the histrionics of the media and the opposition against the Bill.

Talking Drums

This blog was set upon as a medium to communicate my considered views on trends and developements in the country and elesewhere in the world. More especially those trends and developments affecting our lives in South Africa.

Talking Drums became an appropriate tittle for a blog treating matters of international magnitude such the Arab Revolution, the fall of Colonel Muamar Gaddafi, global warming and many more. Drums have played an important communication role through-out the history of black people.

Sadly the blog fell far too short to meeting its set goals. In other words, the drum fell silent. This apology note is the second post in over a year since the blog was set up. It was as a result of an invitation to attend an Annual General Meeting of a provincial media group that made me to update this blog.

I had included blogging and other media as the basis of my sanity. I have done quite handsomely in maintaining my other internet facilities. The neglected kid in the family became this blog.

The good news is that the blog has been resurrected and will stay alive until the Second Coming as our president Jacob Zuma likes to say about his African National Congress - I guess everyone must have their Second Coming moments.

Quite a lot has happened since I posted the Welcome Note of this blog over a year ago and now when I compose this inaugral post. This tells that this blog will be a hive of intellectual engagement.

After all, we are Talking Drums.
